Top 10 Data Breaches in 2009 Expose 220 Million Records

According to Identity Theft Resource Center, government agencies and businesses reported 435 breaches as of November 17th.  More than 220 million records were exposed so far in 2009.  Here are the ten biggest data breaches by volume, according to the ITRC’s numbers:

  1. Heartland Payment Systems - Records exposed: 130 million
  2. National Archive and Records Agency - Records exposed: 76 million
  3. Virginia Prescription Monitoring Program - Records exposed: 8.3 million
  4. Health Net Insurance - Records exposed: 1.5 million
  5. Oklahoma Department of Human Services - Records exposed: 1 million
  6. Blue Cross Blue Shield - Records exposed: 850,000
  7. Network Solutions - Records exposed: 573,000
  8. Jackson Memorial Hospital - Records exposed: 200,000
  9. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill - Records exposed: 163,000
  10. University of California, Berkeley - Records exposed: 160,000

Larger breaches may have occurred but were never reported.  Also only breaches where the ITRC had determined the total number of records exposed were included.
